Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Henderson Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney caps and Gelco-compatible replacement parts throughout Henderson, with most standard cap installations running between $380 and $720 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. If you already have the Gelco cap on hand, installation alone typically runs $180 to $320 depending on roof access and flue configuration. Most Henderson homeowners discover a failed cap the same way: they notice water stains on the ceiling near the chimney, or they spot rust flakes in the firebox after a windy stretch.

Henderson’s desert winds do not let up. A Gelco cap that fits loose or has a corroded mounting bracket will rattle, shift, and eventually fail outright, often within two or three seasons. Danny Cortes has seen plenty of Green Valley homes where the cap looked fine from the ground but was hanging by a single screw once he got on the roof. The cap is the first line of defense against rain, embers, and the pigeons that love Henderson rooftops as much as we do. When it fails, the flue takes the hit, and that is a much more expensive conversation.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco builds two main chimney cap lines we work with regularly in Henderson: the standard single-flue caps and the multi-flue models for homes with two or three flues sharing one chase. Within those lines, the sizing is what matters most. Gelco caps are sold by flue outside dimensions, not by nominal fireplace size, which trips up a lot of homeowners who order online. A cap listed as “13×13” refers to the outside measurement of the clay tile or flue liner, and that needs to match the cap’s inside skirt dimension with roughly a half-inch of clearance per side.
If your home was built in the Green Valley or Anthem areas in the 1990s or 2000s, you likely have a single wood-burning flue with either an 8×13 or 13×13 clay tile. Older homes in the central Henderson corridor sometimes run 9×13. We measure on-site before quoting because guessing is how caps end up in a box in the garage. For Gelco specifically, we recommend the stainless steel versions over the galvanized ones in Henderson. The galvanized caps are less expensive upfront but the combination of sun exposure and occasional monsoon moisture means they show rust within two to three years. Stainless holds up far better here. On the multi-flue side, Gelco’s adjustable-width models let us cover larger chases without custom fabrication in most cases.
We keep the most common Gelco sizes on the truck: 8×13, 9×13, 13×13, and the adjustable multi-flue brackets. When a specialty size comes up, we can typically have it within a few days through our suppliers. We also stock compatible caps from Olympia Chimney and Copperfield, and if your chimney uses a round insulated liner rather than a square clay tile, we carry Gelco’s round-cap adapters as well.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the most common call we get. A failed cap or worn mounting bracket lets rain drive down the flue, and the water shows up inside long before you see any damage on the roof.
- Rust flakes or debris in the firebox. Older galvanized Gelco caps shed rust that drops straight down the flue. If you open the damper and find orange flakes on the fireplace floor, the cap above is degrading.
- A rattling or scraping sound in high wind. Henderson’s spring winds will find any loose mounting screw. A cap that moves in the wind is working its brackets loose, and it will not tighten itself back up.
- Birds or nesting material near the flue. Pigeons and starlings will take advantage of any gap in the cap mesh. Once a bird gets in, you have a blockage and a cleanup job, not just a cap replacement.
- Visible rust or missing sections of mesh when viewed from the ground or a ladder. Mesh that is torn or rusted through no longer stops embers, and an ember escaping a flue in a dry Henderson season is not a risk worth taking.
None of these symptoms fix themselves. The good news is that a failing cap is usually caught before the flue liner or fireplace itself is damaged, and the replacement is a straightforward same-day job in most cases.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is the honest pricing picture for Henderson, no surprises at the door:
- Standard Gelco stainless steel cap, installed: $380 to $520 depending on flue size and roof access
- Multi-flue Gelco cap, installed: $520 to $720 depending on chase width and required brackets
- Installation only, cap supplied by homeowner: $180 to $320
- Round liner adapters, cap only: add $60 to $120 when the flue is round rather than square
Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the mounting hardware, sealing the cap base, and a photo of the finished roof work before the crew comes down. We do not add a trip charge or a “roof access fee” on top of the quote. The written price is the price. If the existing cap left damage to the crown or flue tile, we will show you photos and give you a separate written quote for that work before touching it. That is the Cedarwell Care Promise in practice: no on-the-spot pressure, no add-on surprises.

Our cap installations are covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap shifts, leaks, or fails within the first year, we come back and make it right at no charge. In our experience with Henderson wind conditions, a correctly measured and torqued cap installation should last well beyond that. The stainless caps themselves carry a manufacturer’s warranty, typically 10 years on the Gelco stainless line.
DIY or Call Us?
Homeowners sometimes ask whether they can swap a Gelco cap themselves. The honest answer: the risk is not worth the savings. A chimney cap installation means working on a roof, often a steep one, in wind conditions like we get in Henderson. The job requires measuring the flue correctly, drilling into the flue tile or crown without cracking it, and sealing everything so the cap does not become a water problem later. Drilling into a clay flue tile with too much pressure will crack the tile, and a cracked tile means water gets into the chimney chase and eventually the house. We repair that kind of damage more often than you would think, and it is never cheap.
If you want to check things yourself first, here is what you can safely do from the ground: look for visible rust, check whether the cap sits level, and note any missing mesh. Do not get on the roof. Do not lean a ladder against the chimney chase. If the cap looks questionable, call us at (775) 485-5516. We come out, measure, show you photos of what we find, and hand you a written price before any work starts. If the cap is still solid and just needs the brackets tightened, we will tell you that too and charge you only for the service call.
How Often Should a Gelco Cap Be Replaced in Henderson?
In the Henderson climate, a galvanized Gelco cap has a realistic service life of three to five years, while a stainless steel cap can run ten to fifteen years with occasional inspection. The biggest factors here are UV exposure and wind-driven dust, both of which accelerate surface wear more than rain does. We recommend including a cap check with your annual chimney sweep or inspection, which catches loose brackets and early rust before they become a water leak.

AfterCan a Failing Gelco Cap Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?
Sometimes the answer is yes. If the cap itself is sound but the mounting bracket or screws are loose, we can often re-secure and reseal it for $60 to $120. If the mesh has torn or the cap shows significant rust, replacement is almost always the better value. Patching a rusted cap buys you a season at most, and the patch job leaves the same water entry points in play. We will show you the cap up close on our camera feed or in photos before we recommend one path or the other, and the choice is always yours with a written price attached to each option.
How Long Does the Installation Take?
Most single-flue Gelco cap installations run 45 to 90 minutes from setup to clean-up. A multi-flue cap with adjustable brackets can take up to two hours depending on the chase size. You do not need to do anything inside the house, and the fireplace stays usable the entire time. We protect the work area with drop cloths inside when we pass through, the technicians wear shoe covers, and you get a photo of the finished roof work before anyone asks for a signature.
Do You Stock Gelco Caps on the Truck?
Yes. We keep the common Henderson flue sizes, 8×13, 9×13, and 13×13, in stainless steel on the truck, plus adjustable multi-flue brackets. If your flue is an unusual size, we can order it and return within a few days. If you are looking at a Gelco part you bought online and want us to install it, that works too. We will inspect the part before putting it on the roof to confirm it is sized correctly and undamaged. We also work regularly with DuraFlex and HeatShield products when a cap installation turns into a liner situation, which happens more often in older Henderson homes than in the newer Green Valley builds.
Know What’s in Your Flue Before You Light the First Fire of the Season
That line is not just something Danny likes to say on the roof. It is the whole job. A chimney cap that failed over the summer is invisible from the living room, and the first fire of November is when a lot of Henderson families find out. We would rather you know before the fire, before the water stains, before the bird nest. Call Kindling Chimney Henderson at (775) 485-5516 and we will come look at your cap, your flue, and the whole chimney. A live person answers the phone, day or night. The written price comes before the work starts, every time, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers it after. If the cap is fine, we will tell you that and leave your roof alone. That is how we work.
