Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Henderson Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Famco-compatible chimney caps throughout Henderson, and a typical replacement runs between $185 and $460 installed, depending on the cap size and whether the mounting flange needs repair. Most Henderson homes we visit are ready for installation on the first trip, since our trucks carry the common Famco sizes for tile and metal flues. You’ll usually discover the cap failed one of two ways: you spot rust flakes or a missing section from the yard after a windstorm, or you hear a metallic rattle when a gust comes down off the McCullough Range. The faster catch is during a sweep, when our camera shows the cap’s mesh torn and the spark arrestor doing nothing.

Danny Cortes has walked enough Henderson roofs to know what wind does to a Famco cap over five or six summers. We’ll match your existing cap to the right replacement, confirm the flue dimensions, and give you a written price before anything gets bolted down.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
We work with Famco’s full cap lineup, but most Henderson calls involve three lines: the SC series (standard single-flue caps with square or round bases), the TC series (top-mount caps for multi-flue chimneys), and the DCC series (draft-increasing caps that handle Nevada’s shifting wind direction better than flat designs). If you still have the original box or the spec sticker on the underside of the cap rim, that’s your fastest match. No sticker? We measure the flue tile’s outside dimensions on the roof, and for metal chimneys, the inside diameter of the pipe.
One Famco-specific gotcha: their square-base caps are sized to sit over the flue tile’s outside edge, not inside it. A lot of Henderson homeowners buy a replacement cap online, get the flue’s inside measurement, and end up with a cap that drops into the flue instead of straddling it. That’s a $200 mistake we see every season. Famco’s stainless steel is genuinely good metal, but the hardware (corner screws and the aluminum mesh edges) fails first. We stock stainless aftermarket equivalents for the SC and TC lines that meet or exceed Famco’s mesh gauge, and we’ll tell you plainly when the OEM part is the better call.
We also install Famco caps alongside liner work from DuraFlex and HeatShield and masonry repairs using Gelco products, so if your cap replacement turns into a flue conversation, the whole job stays under one crew.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust staining on the chimney crown around the cap base. This is the mounting hardware failing, not necessarily the cap body. Henderson’s dry air slows rust, but monsoon-season rain followed by weeks of 100-degree heat cycles the hardware hard. The cap may still be fine; the screws and brackets are not.
- You hear a metallic rattle when wind hits the chimney. A loose cap bangs against the flue tile in gusts. Left alone, the vibration widens the mounting holes and can crack the top flue tile’s edges.
- The mesh spark arrestor is torn, sagging, or missing a section. Henderson’s spring winds carry sand and fine debris that work on aluminum mesh like sandpaper. Once the mesh fails, embers have a clear path out, and birds have a clear path in.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace or a damp smell inside the firebox after rain. A cap that no longer seals lets rain ride down the flue. In Henderson’s short but intense storm season, one failed storm collar or shifted cap can streak a drywall ceiling in a single afternoon.
- The cap is visibly tilted or you can see daylight between the cap base and the flue tile from the roofline. Wind has worked the base loose. The fix is usually a new cap with fresh mounting hardware, not a rebuild, but it’s worth a camera look inside the flue to make sure the shifted cap didn’t scrape the tile on its way out of alignment.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Henderson, you should expect to pay:
- Standard Famco SC, TC, or DCC cap with mount/brackets: $185 – $320 installed
- Custom-size stainless cap for an unusual flue opening: $280 – $460 installed
- Crown repair work (if the chimney crown is crumbling where the cap mounts): Add $210 – $540, depending on surface area
The range comes down to three things: flue size (custom caps are built to order), roof access (a steep second-story pitch in Green Valley takes longer than a low single-story ranch), and whether the crown needs patching so the new cap has something solid to anchor into. We give a written price before work begins, and that number doesn’t move unless we open the crown and find damage we couldn’t see from the roofline. Even then, the fix gets its own written approval, never a surprise at the truck.
Every Famco cap replacement includes fresh stainless hardware, a re-check of the flue top with our camera, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap shifts, rattles, or loosens within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for rust streaks on the chimney visible from the yard, listen for that rattle in strong wind, and note whether the cap sits level from your best sight line. You can also eyeball the mesh through binoculars. What you shouldn’t do is climb the roof with a drill and a replacement cap you ordered online. A chimney cap replacement means working at height, often on a slope, while drilling into masonry or metal. One slip on a Henderson barrel tile roof turns a $200 cap job into a broken tile, a pulled muscle, or worse. If the cap is loose, the flue top usually needs a camera check anyway, and that’s tooling most homeowners don’t keep in the garage.
If you’re unsure whether your Famco cap needs replacing, call (775) 485-5516. We’ll talk through what you’re seeing and tell you honestly whether it’s urgent or can wait until fall. If we come out for a sweep and inspection, the cap gets checked as part of it.
FAQs
A Famco stainless cap body typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Henderson, but the mounting hardware and mesh typically need attention every 5 to 8 years because the mesh erodes faster than the steel under desert wind and monsoon rain. If the cap itself is still sound, fresh hardware and a mesh replacement can extend the service life several more seasons. Call (775) 485-5516 and we’ll give you an honest read on whether you need a full cap replacement or just the failing pieces.
Yes, in many cases: we can replace the mesh spark arrestor, swap out corroded mounting brackets, or re-seat a cap that’s shifted but not damaged. If the cap body itself is rusted through or the base is warped, that’s a replacement. The deciding factor is whether the cap is still doing its real job: keeping water out and sparks contained.
Most Henderson installations take 45 to 90 minutes on site, from the initial roofline measurement to the final camera check and cleanup below. A straight replacement with no crown work runs under an hour. If the cap is a custom build, expect a short wait for the part from our supplier, then the same one-trip install.
Yes, our trucks carry the common Famco-compatible sizes for tile and metal flues, which covers most Henderson chimneys. If your cap is a custom size, we’ll measure, order, and return to install once it’s in, typically within a few business days. Either way, you’ll know the price before we start labor.
