Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Crown Repair: The Henderson Owner’s Guide
Gelco crown repair in Henderson typically runs $425 to $900 installed, depending on whether we’re sealing a cracked crown or rebuilding it entirely. Kindling Chimney Henderson stocks Gelco-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. Most homeowners discover a failed crown the same way: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a flaky white residue on the brick below the chimney cap.

In Henderson, crown failure happens faster than homeowners expect. The desert sun bakes the concrete crown all summer, then winter rain and the occasional freeze-thaw cycle work the cracks wider. By the time water is visibly running down the outside of the chimney, the crown has usually been failing for a year or more. Danny Cortes and our crew see this constantly in Green Valley Ranch and Anthem, where homes built in the early 2000s are now hitting the age where original Gelco crowns start to spall and crumble.
Know what’s in your flue before you light the first fire of the season. A damaged crown is the easiest chimney problem to ignore and one of the most expensive to put off, because the water it lets in does not stay in the chimney. It moves into the chase, the framing, and eventually the drywall.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco crowns are found on most Gelco chimney chase systems installed in Southern Nevada over the past 20-plus years. If you have a Gelco prefabricated or masonry-adjacent crown, the factory part was most commonly a cast concrete slab poured or set at the top of the chase, sealed at the flue tile joint with a flexible sealant. The most common field versions we work on are the Gelco standard 6-inch and 8-inch flue crowns, plus the larger chase-top style crowns that cap wood-burning fireplaces.
Here is the compatibility gotcha most Henderson owners run into: Gelco crowns are not one universal part. The flue outside diameter, the chase opening dimensions, and the crown overhang all vary by model year and by whether the fireplace is wood-burning or gas. An 8-inch flue needs a crown with a true 8-inch opening, not a 7.5-inch “close enough.” We measure the flue OD, the chase top, and the crown overhang before recommending a part. If you can find the Gelco data plate, usually on the firebox or behind the lower grille, that helps, but most plates in Henderson are sun-faded past reading, so we measure instead.
For Gelco systems specifically, there is no meaningful advantage to chasing a factory OEM crown. Gelco crowns are cast concrete, and a properly spec’d replacement from a quality manufacturer using the same dimensions performs equally well or better when we install it with a modern flexible sealant. We also stock parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems, and we’ll tell you plainly which one matches what you actually have.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- White chalky streaks running down the brick or stucco below the chimney cap. This is efflorescence: water has entered the crown, dissolved trace salts in the mortar, and carried them to the surface. It means water has been moving through the crown for months.
- Concrete spalling: chunks or flakes of the crown surface are missing or sitting in the rain gutter. Henderson’s summer heat plus winter moisture creates a freeze-thaw cycle in the topmost inch of concrete, and once spalling starts, it accelerates yearly.
- A rust-colored drip stain near the top of the chimney or on the firebox floor after rain. Water getting past the crown is rusting the damper assembly or the fireplace throat. This is one of the first interior signs, and it’s often mistaken for a chimney leak from the flue, when the crown is the entry point.
- The crown sealant is pulling away from the flue tile, leaving a visible gap. In Henderson’s dry heat, sealants lose flexibility in four to six years. Once a gap opens between the crown and the flue, rain runs straight down the outside of the flue pipe.
- A musty smell from the fireplace after a heavy monsoon-season storm. We get a handful of these calls every August in Henderson. Water pools inside the crown, soaks into the firebrick, and the odor travels into the house before any visible stain appears.

Gelco crown repair in Henderson falls into two honest brackets. A surface crack repair with a fresh pour of crown sealer and a new flue-tile joint typically runs $425 to $575. A full crown rebuild, where we pour and tool a new concrete crown over the existing chase with proper overhang and drip edge, runs $650 to $900 in the Henderson market. The range depends on chimney height, access (two-story chases in Green Valley are slower work), how much of the old crown needs removal, and whether we need to resecure the flue tile first.
Every Gelco crown repair we quote includes the parts, labor, sealants, haul-away of old material, and a written price before any work starts. No surprise upcharges on the day of the job. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair is not done right, we make it right. We follow the C.A.R.E. values on every single job – shoe covers and drop cloths down before anything moves, and a photo of the clean-up taken before the crew leaves. That matters when we’ll be working on your roof or ladder staging above your landscaping.
DIY or Call Us?
What an owner can safely do is look. From the ground, photograph the crown with a phone zoomed in; look at the sealant gap around the flue; look for spalled chunks. From the roof (if you have easy, safe access), a quick visual check is fine. What we recommend against is applying any kind of roof tar, silicone, or big-box sealant to a Gelco crown. Crowns need to shed water outward with a proper drip edge, and a homeowner applied patch that traps water under itself is worse than doing nothing. Also, up on a second-story Henderson roof near a chimney is not the place to learn that concrete repair is messy.
If the crown is cracked but not yet spalling, you have some time. If it is spalling or the sealant has failed, the clean fix is a pro rebuild, and that is a one-visit job for us. Call (775) 485-5516 and we’ll give you a straight answer and a written quote.
FAQs
An original Gelco crown in the Henderson desert typically lasts 12 to 18 years before the first meaningful cracking, and a properly rebuilt crown with a modern flexible sealant should hold every bit as long. The biggest variable is sealant quality at the flue joint, which is why we use a high-flexibility commercial sealant rather than the standard stuff.
Hairline cracks can be sealed; structural cracks, spalling, or a failed flue joint usually mean a rebuild of the crown surface. The honest answer depends on what the concrete looks like underneath the flaking, and we’ll show you photos from the camera before we recommend anything.
